What size rug for a living room?

For most living rooms the answer is 8 × 10 ft or larger with the front legs of the sofa and chairs on the rug. A rug that holds all the furniture is usually 10 × 13 ft or larger, and a coffee-table-only rug at least 5 × 8 ft.[1 · Oct 29, 2026]

Size the rug to the sofa

Bed Bath & Beyond says the rug should be at least 12 in wider than the sofa on each side, which means the rug's long side should be at least the sofa length plus 24 in.[2 · Oct 29, 2026] Lowe's publishes a furniture-length chart for living rooms.[3 · Oct 29, 2026] Both, side by side:
